Curriculum, assessment and outcomes
The children at Mandeville are learning at an early developmental stage and, for this reason, we have adopted the early years framework throughout the school to inform our teaching and learning.
Mandeville has developed a bespoke curriculum covering the 7 areas of learning as set out in the SEND code of practice and EYFS framework.
The curriculum has been written in consultation with school physiotherapist, speech and language, occupational and music therapists working at Mandeville. All staff working at Mandeville are given the opportunity to contribute to the curriculum throughout its ongoing development.
The Mandeville School curriculum has two pathways:
Mandeville Curriculum 1 supports children who are working at the engagement levels of learning. The 5 areas of engagement include exploration, realisation, anticipation, persistence and initiation.
Mandeville Curriculum 2 supports children who are working on ‘I can’ statements and accessing Pre-key stage standards of learning.
The seven key learning areas in the Mandeville curriculum include:
- Communication and language
- Physical development and sensory
- Personal, social, emotional and mental health
- Literacy – reading and writing: including developing phase 1, 2 and 3 phonics
- Mathematics, cognition and learning
- Understanding the world
- Expressive art and design

Physical Development and writing skills are inextricably linked. In order to be able to perform the fine motor dexterity that writing requires children need to have strong muscles, good co-ordination and balance.
